What are the advantages of the Hope Industrial enclosure over an off-the-shelf industrial enclosure?

Hope Industrial displays, keyboards, and mounts can be combined with off-the shelf industrial enclosures to create a full stand-alone workstation, and our customers have been taking this approach for years. But using off-the-shelf enclosures requires solving a common set of issues: customers must select a suitable enclosure, find a way to mount the PC or other device, and mount the enclosure itself. Then issues like supplying power, keeping components cool, and cabling must be dealt with. Our Commercial and Industrial PC Enclosure seeks to simplify this process by solving many of these problems and allowing the entire workstation to be purchased from a single supplier.

  • PC Friendly – Large mounting panel allows the PC to be mounted to the inside of the door, making it easy to access the back of the PC to attach cables. Secondary service panel allows attachment of other devices. Both panels can be drilled to accommodate any required bolt pattern.
  • Safe Home for Non-Industrial PCs – When office grade or other non-industrial equipment must be used in a rugged environment, the enclosure can provide a safe, dry mounting location, even in full NEMA 4X (IP65/66) wash-down areas.
  • Cooling Options – The enclosure’s large size (16.42 ft2 of surface area) and component mounting locations have been optimized to keep equipment cool. When higher internal wattage consumption is expected, an internal circulating fan can help increase cooling and reduce internal hot-spots. For users of the Dell Optiplex XE2 computer, a separate cooling system can be purchased.
  • Stainless Steel – very rugged stainless steel construction (black carbon steel optional) is tougher and easier to clean than plastic and still offers a full NEMA Type 4/4X (IP65/66) rating for wash-down applications.
  • Integration with Hope Industrial Mounts – The enclosure is pre-drilled and fitted for use with Hope Industrial pedestal mount options. All cable routing is handled internally without any additional drilling or sealing required by the customer.
  • Wall Mount Option – When a full pedestal is not required, the enclosure can be mounted directly to a wall using an optional bracket (Hope Part No.: WB-ENCL2-SS4).
  • Internal Cable Management – Included, pre-fit cable raceway comes pre-mounted, ensuring a clean installation. Each enclosure also includes a pre-mounted AC power strip with terminal block input.

Which Commercial or Industrial PCs will work with this enclosure?

If a device will fit into the provided mounting area and does not give off more heat than the enclosure can safely dissipate (while staying in the devices recommended temperature range), it will generally work with this enclosure. Here we address the physical mounting space, and heat concerns are addressed later.

Physical Constraints

The maximum internal space for PCs or other primary devices is (W x H x D) 413 mm x 470 mm x 152 mm (16.25" x 18.5" x 6.0") which includes a space for typical cable connectors plugged into the rear of the computer. This measurement does not include any allowance for space needed by any required mounting brackets. The maximum allowable space is (W x H x D) 470 mm x 470 mm x 152 mm (18.5" x 18.5" x 6.0").

A primary internal (W x H) 356 mm x 457 mm (14.0" x 18.0") PC mounting plate is provided which can be easily removed and drilled to accommodate mounting patterns for various device mounting brackets.

A secondary (W x H) 451 mm x 368 mm (17.75" x 14.5")  service panel is also provided for additional equipment mounting space, up to a maximum allowable size of (W x H x D) 381 mm x 368 mm x 152 mm (15.0" x 14.5" x 6.0").

Most industrial PCs have integrated mount points which our mounting plate can easily accommodate. When mounting desktop PC equipment, choose a small form factor (SFF or USFF) design. Many smaller desktop form factors will also fit. For any given device, the temperature rise difference between the bottom and middle/top portions of the enclosure is as much as 5°C. For best temperature performance, devices should be installed at the bottom of the PC enclosure. The internal fan kit should only be installed if devices are to be installed in the middle/top portions of the enclosure.

Mounting the Dell Optiplex XE2 Small Form Factor

The Dell Optiplex XE2 line of PCs is particularly suited for use in this enclosure thanks to its high heat handling (45°C) design. To accommodate this PC, an optional mount and cooling kit (PN: MK-PC10-DELLXE2) is available that uses the Optiplex XE2ís integrated mount points.

Will my PC or other devices run too hot inside this enclosure?

Using Desktop and Industrial PCs Inside the Enclosure

To determine the maximum allowable wattage of the PC and any other devices mounted inside the enclosure, you must take into account the total wattage consumed by the equipment, the maximum expected ambient temperature (outside the enclosure), and the maximum rated operating temperature of the devices inside the enclosure. Please contact us for a consultation by one of our engineers, or use the following steps:

  1. Calculate the total expected wattage that will be consumed by the equipment you will place in the enclosure.
  2. Refer to the chart below to determine the expected heat rise inside the enclosure at the wattage determined in step 1.

    Note that the chart shows two different curves depending on whether you are using the optional internal circulating fan (PN: MK-PC10-STD). With the optional fan kit in place, better heat dissipation is possible. Use the appropriate line depending on whether or not the fan kit has been installed.

  3. Determine the maximum ambient temperature expected outside the enclosure and add this to the heat rise determined in step 2.
  4. Compare this to the maximum rated operating temperature of the equipment to make sure that the calculated temperature does not exceed the rated temperature of the device.

When selecting a PC, keep in mind that vented devices and those with lower-wattage consumption will typically run cooler inside the enclosure. Cooler operating temperatures will extend the life of most electronic components.

Remember that the heat rise information below is based on extensive testing using a variety of heat sources in a controlled environment. Actual temperature performance can vary dramatically based on environmental factors and even the applications running on the PC. Calculations should be performed to determine suitability of your equipment for use in this enclosure, but actual operating temperatures should be measured once installing equipment in the enclosure to ensure that the manufacturers' recommended operating temperatures are not exceeded.

For applications where additional cooling is needed, contact us for information on active cooling options, which can extend the heat handling capability of the enclosure up to 175W. Keep in mind that many PC manufacturers list the maximum power supply wattage in electrical specifications, which is the absolute maximum wattage the PC can consume. PCs generally consume much less than this: one PC recently tested listed a 300W power supply, but only consumed 50W when running normal business applications. For determining internal heat rise, use the nominal wattage consumed by the device under normal operation, not the maximum power supply wattage.

Using the Dell Optiplex XE2 Inside the Enclosure

The Dell Optiplex XE2 is designed to operate at higher temperatures than most comparable non-industrial PCs. The optional Hope Industrial cooling kit (PN: MK-PC10-DELLXE2) mounts to the front of the Optiplex XE2 and greatly increases this internal airflow so that heat can be removed from the computerís case and circulated throughout the enclosure where it can be dissipated through the large 16.42 ft2 of surface area.

The Optiplex XE2 is rated to ambient temperatures of up to 45°C. We are able to maintain the Optiplex XE2's 45°C rating inside our enclosure when the optional MK-PC10-DELLXE2 cooling kit is used.

Actual thermal performance may vary depending on individual environmental characteristics, or if other heat-generating equipment is mounted inside the enclosure. If other equipment will be mounted inside the enclosure along with an Optiplex XE2, contact us so that one of our engineers can help calculate expect heat rise.
